Coming soon: 'Hard Vrocht Grun'

a nefa based World War I project.

With the imminence of the centenary of the beginning of World War One, an innovative new project is being run in Aberdeenshire to bring the history of the period to life for Secondary school pupils and others interested in studying it..

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund the project called the 'Hard Vrocht Grun' ('Hard Fought Ground - a farming term that Aberdeenshire's soldiers used to describe the war zone) is being co-ordinated by the Heritage Education Partnership and is using the collections of the members (Libraries, Archives, Registrars, Museums and Heritage Groups) to explore the impact of the war on the North-east of Scotland.

In consideration of this, the project team is on the lookout for objects, ephemera and stories on this momentous topic relating to local people and places; the material doesn't just have to concern service personnel although this, naturally, would be of great interest it could serve narratives about fishermen, farmers, quarrymen, nurses, munition workers, schoolchildren etc.

If you have anything that you would like to contribute to the project, whether small or large, trivial or important, the team would be delighted to hear from you. Material already sourced, beyond the Council collections, includes, letters, books, diaries, postcards, clothing, photographs, medals, boxes and jewellery. Anything loaned would simply be photographed and returned to the owner.

If you would like to offer anything to the 'Hard Vrocht Grun', please contact the website or: arc@enterprise.net
