I live for the promise

Floo'er the heather, ye're my heather bell
And I know she knows I love her, mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, As sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

Ah went for a trip tae the Hielands
When the weather was bonny and blue
Was a lad by the name o MacGregor and chance he tae settle me doon

Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell
And I know she knows the lover mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, As sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell
And I know she knows the lover mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, As sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

Ah went for my trip tae the Hielands
When the weather was bonny and blue
Was a lad by the name of MacGregor and chance he tae settle me doon

Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell
And I know she knows the lover mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, as sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

[JT] Good is it?

[TMcK] I've never heard that one.

[JT] Good that one.

[TMcK] Did you mother sing that one

[JT] My mother sang that one.

06
[JT] This is a modern een. It's nae an aul-fashioned song.

[JT] This is

Jealous heart, o jealous heart, keep beatin
Can't you see the damage you have done
You've gone, you've gone away for ever
Jealous heart, now I'm the only one

Your memories keep on haunting me
And I have loved you from the start
Jealous heart, o jealous heart a beating
You've, o your jealous heart.

Jealous heart, o jealous heart a beating
Can't you see the damage you have done
You've gone, you've gone away for ever
Jealous heart, now I'm the only one.

Your memories keep on haunting me
And I have loved you from the start
Jealous heart, o jealous heart a beating
For you, o your jealous heart.
For you, o you your jealous heart.

[JT] Now that's the kind o song that I would sing as a young girl. That's the kind of song I love. See if I can make a better job of it.

07
Jealous heart, o jealous heart a beating
can't you see the damage you have done
Your gone, you've gone away for ever
Oh jealous heart, now I'm the only one

Your memories keep on haunting me
And I have loved you from the start
Jealous heart, o jealous heart a beating
For you, for your jealous heart.

08
Have you ever been lonely, have you ever been blue?
Have you ever loved someone, as I love you?

Be a little forgiving for the mistake I made.
Can't you see I suffer, Can't you see I ???.

Be a little forgiving, take her back in your heart,
Why can't we go on for ever, when we're apart?

If you knew what I went through, then you know that I love you.
Have you ever been lonely, have you ever been blue?

Have you ever been lonely, have you ever been blue?
Have you ever loved someone as I loved you?
Be a little forgiving for the mistake I made.
Can't you see I've suffered, can't you see I've suffered, ???
Be a little forgiving take her back in your heart.
Why can we go on forever when we are apart?
If you knew what I went through, then you know that I love you?

Have you ever been lonely, have you ever been blue?
Have you ever been lonely, have you ever been blue?

09
Jealous heart, jealous heart, keep beatin
Can't you see the damage you have done
You've gone, you've gone away for ever
Jealous heart, now I'm the only one.

You memories keep on haunting me
And I have loved you from the start
Jealous heart, o jealous heart a beating
For you, for your jealous heart
For you, for you o jealous heart

[JT] Ye'll like that. Well I think that wis Jimmy Rogers songs an a.

There was other one about the old pals. I don't know if I can.

Oh the old pals are roamin, the best you see
You pals you just find every day.
You make my very heart seem brighter
Just for your dear face to see

In my shattered life I find
Nothing seems right you see
You'll always be a pal of mine
Though it may be just only in dreams.

Your hair has turned to silver
And oh you're getting old
Oh daddy dear, o daddy
I'm coming back to you.

Your made my boy so happy
But still I want to know
Daddy dear or daddy
I'm coming back home to you.

11
[JT] Did you hear a song in that tape you give me. I made up a song. That's one of my songs.

[TMcK] You recited a verse.

[JT] I made the verses and the song and the whole melody. And I give it tae Jimmy Porter and that's my song, I made it up. I made three songs. At's the first time I heard that song on that tape. And I never heard the other two that I composed. I composed a lot of songs, well I gave them three songs anyway and that's the first one that I've heard. So, it's a good song, and I made it up myself. My husband was in his bed, taking a rest through the day and I sat at the piano. And the song was about my son, my boy, he was seventeen and he went away from home and I was a bittie upset about him. And my husband gid away tae hae a lie doon ben the room and I sat at the piano. And I sat and I played it and played it. And I was thinking about the boy you know, far away from home, and it's my only child. And I was playing this melody at came intae my head. And I ran and got this bit o paper and wis writing doon the words thinkin aboot it. And I says tae my husband, cried ben till him, come ben and hear this, I made up a song. Oh what now. Come ben and hear this, I made up a song. And he came ben and I made up that song and it was all about my son. And I always wis making up songs. I hae a hale hullock o songs I've made up, nivver did onything wi em. But that's my song, it is my home town, I'm not there. I was thinkin about my loon, my boy and a the time I was feeling sad I was makin up this song. And Jimmy Porter came and ??? and that's the first time I've heard myself singing it. I sung it to them. And the tune goes ….

Tis my home town, but I'm not there
It is my home town, but I'm not there
I left my mama, never to return
It is my home town, but I'm not there

la, la. etc…
[Plays melody.]

It is my home, but I'm not there.

[JT] I made up that myself. And you know this, I didna mine all the words until I heard, my god did I sing it a! And you hear me looking for one o the verses an at, and oh my god, at's great. That's my favourite song on there, on the tape you give me. I made that song up myself.

12
And then there wis anither een aboot, I'd jist came hame tae see a my friends. Now this is just imagination, thinkin, thinking things, imagination. Someone had been away from home and they come home to see a their folk.

A jist came hame tae a my friens
A came hame tae see ye a
We'll hae a guid aul hearty nicht
Afore I gang awa

Weel the neighbours a came flockin in
They kissed me ane and a
And said I wis lookin afa weel
Handsome, bonny an bra

Then a quine she comes in, in a strippit frock
An she wis the floo'er amon them a

[JT] The song gaed on like at. Tell the truth, I canna mine on't. I hiv it a written oot. I nivver sing it. But that song on there, I composed it myself, the tune and the words. It's my song.

[TMcK] You made the tune yourself.

[JT] Yes, I made everything myself. Did you hear Hamish Henderson 'What a lovely song Jane'. Hear him sayin that on the tape.

13
I had another one 'Give me all your love and your charms'. An at come oot great an a'.

[TMcK] Do those other ones have tunes as well

[JT] Aye, tunes I made up in ma heid.

14
I made up a tune the other night. I was playing the organ here and I made up an old tune. now it'll come in my head tonight maybe. Oh my god, I've made up a tune. And after that I played it and played it. and then I begun to awa mak tea and that, my supper and you know this the tune went away. And I thoucht o my god I've forgotten it. And then in the morning I was makin my breakfast, the tune come back tae me. Oh my god the tune come back. And I gid hummin it, and humming it, I didnae mak words tae it, I just hummed it.

15
[Organ playing.]

Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell (I like this one)
And I know she knows the lover mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, as sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

Ah went for a trip tae the Hielands
When the weather was bonny and blue
There was a lad by the name o MacGregor who chanced tae settle me doon

Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell
And I know she knows the lover mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, as sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

I like tae sing like Harry Lauder and some o them.

Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell
And I know she knows the lover mair than I can tell
Oh but she's bonny, as sweet as the floo'er in the dell
Floo'er o the heather, ye're my heather bell

16
O we met on a hillside
One bright summer's day
When the heather wis bloomin
An a'thing wis gay
Bonny wis Annie
Charmin wis my Annie
My bonny wee Annie
The floo'er o Drumblane

O she blushed like a wild rose
One bright summer's day
When I asked her the question
O she didnae say nay
Bonny wis Annie
Charmin wis my Annie
My bonny wee Annie
The floo'er o Drumblane

When we met on the hillside
One bright summer's day
When Annie my Annie
She came trippin along
Oh bonny wis Annie
Charmin wis my Annie
My bonnie wee Annie
The floo'er o Drumblane

When we met on that hillside
One bright summer's day
And the first time I saw her
I knew she was mine
Oh bonny wis Annie
Charmin wis my Annie
My bonnie wee Annie
The floo'er o Drumblane

[JT] At's an old song that. That's a very old one, I've heard my mother and my granny singing that one. I hope to god the singin will come oot a richt.

Let me sleep in your barn tonight, mister
For I'm tired lying out in the cold
Let me sleep in your barn tonight, mister
And I'm sure I'll do you no harm

It was on a cold frosty morning
When the snow lay deep on the hill,
Oh there came an poor, poor stranger
And he had no where to lie down.

Let me sleep in your barn, kind mister,
For I'm tired lying out in the cold
I've got no tobacco nor matches
And I'm sure I'll do you no harm

[Sings melody.]

It was on a cold frosty morning
When the snow lay deep on the ground
Oh there came an poor, poor stranger
And he had no where to lie down

Let me sleep in your barn tonight, mister
God I'm tired lying out in the cold
Let me sleep in your barn tonight, mister
And I'm sure I'll do you no harm
And I'm sure I'll do you no harm

Now fit's the ither een?

Give me a home
Where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope roam,
I would not exchange my home on the range,
Where the clouds aren't cloudy all day.

Oh home, home on the range,
Where the deers and the antelope roam,
I would not exchange my home on the range,
Where the clouds are not cloudy all day.

[sings melody.]

Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope roam
I would not exchange my home on the range
Where the clouds are not cloudy all day.

19
There's nothing left for me,
In the days that used to be,
But just a memory among my souvenirs,
Some letters tied in blue,
A photograph or two,
A find a rose from you among my souvenirs.

A few more tokens within my treasure chest,
And so I do my best to bring me consolation,
I count them all apart as the tear drops start,
I find a broken heart among my souvenirs.

And nothing left for me,
In the days that used to be,
But just a memory among my souvenirs,
Some letters tied in blue,
A photograph or two,
I find a rose from you among my souvenirs.

A few more tokens left within my treasure chest,
And so I do my best to bring me consolation,
I count them all apart as the tear drops start,
I find a broken heart among my souvenirs.

20
Our love was drifting apart,
There's [forgets words] you now,
And yet I can't forget somehow,
Why do I always remember,
When I'm tryin so hard to forget,
I know I've lost you forever,
Or the ghost of your smile haunts me yet.
I go and dreaming about you,
Life's not worth living without you,
So tell me why do I always remember,
When I'm trying so hard to forget?

I often think in my heart,
That love is drifting apart [hums]
And yet I can't forget somehow,
Why do I always remember,
When I'm tryin so hard to forget?
I know I've lost you forever,
But the ghost of your smile haunts me yet,
I go on dreaming about you,
Life's not worth living without you,
So tell me why do I always remember,
When I'm tryin so hard to forget?

21
Oh Antonio, he's went away,
He left me all alonio, all upon my own-i-o,
I would love to meet him, with his new sweetheart
Up will go Antonio and his ice cream cart

Oh oh Antonio, he's went away,
He left me all alone-i-o, all upon my own-i-o,
I would love to meet him, with his new sweetheart,
Up will go Antonio and his ice cream cart.

22
Ask Peggy O' Neill, is she smiling all the while
Ask Peggy O' Neill.

23
Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you.
Let me hear you whisper that you love me true.
Keep the home fires burning and your eyes to blue.
Just let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you.

Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you.
Let me hear you whisper that you love me true.
Keep the home fires burning and your eyes to blue.
Just let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you.
