NEFA > ARC > DVD Audio 5.1

DVD - A 5.1 Surround is a new technology that will soon become as familiar to us as stereo. Designed for film and theatre audio playback, the system is fast becoming a new standard in sound recording and reproduction for domestic use.

ARC STUDIO DVD-A 5.1 SURROUND

5.1 SURROUND WORKSHOP

Q. What's DVD-A?
A. Digital Versatile Disc-Audio
Q. What??

A. DVD-Audio
uses a 6 channel system (5 speakers or "radiators" and 1 Sub Audio - hence 5.1), as opposed to stereo's two channel system (left and right), placing sound around the listener. On a well-executed DVD-Audio surround mix musical instruments are heard with a richer and more natural timbre. In general, definition and detail are significantly improved. The audio industry predicts that DVD will replace the CD in the near future. The good news is that your CD collection can be played on a DVD player (but not vice-versa).

5.1 at Arc Studio
Keen to find out what this new technology could do for acoustic music, audio engineer James Hunter went off to a SURROUND 5.1 seminar at Abbey Road Studios. Armed with "the knowledge" we brought in the necessary extras and recorded a couple of songs with a few overdubs. The sound was quite astonishing and we immediately set about fitting up for 5.1.

ARC 5.1 Studio Plan
FL Front Left (in 5.1 loudspeakers are defined audio radiators)
AC Actual Centre (as different from stereo's Phantom Centre)

FR Front Right
SL Surround Left
SR Surround Right
SUB Sub Audio (or subwoofer)
HS Hot Spot or Sweet Spot, trade terms for optimised listen position, in concert terms, "the best seat in the house."

The performance and playback room replicates the 5.1 control room system in an open home room environment, monitoring through:
5 x KEF Q55.2 Direct Radiators
1 x Velocodyne CT100 Sub Audio

Using this dual playback system allows the producer / engineer instant comparisons with the hi-fi home environment through all stages of production.

The control room is permanently ready for both stereo recording and 5.1 Surround Manipulation (placing recorded sounds and fx in the Surround picture).

5.1 Workshops
"Introduction to 5.1 SURROUND" Audio Engineers' "Hands On" Workshops starting soon.

Those who attend will have an opportunity to get hands-on experience of 5.1 speaker placement and calibration as well as surround mixing sessions using both console and workstation.
With 6 stereo plains at the production team's disposal - front, rear, left, right, plus the two diagonals, mixing in 5.1 is an extraordinary experience, especially if it's new to you.

Please contact us for details of forthcoming workshop details and registration.
